Over many years I have developed a technique of automatique drawing. With time, the quality of what “comes through” this drawing process has improved. This painting is the largest and most ambitious of my attempts to draw forth what hides in the subconscious darkness. What came through this time was a surprising map of spiritual and psychological complexes that suggest a patttern of lived symbolism. Much of the symbolism that came through I am still interpreting for more universal and personal understandings.

The coloured background is a billowing plane of coulour. It is toned from light yellow in the bottom lower left to dark red in the top right. Overtop this coloured plane is a layer of thin chaotic black lined drawings that interweave with one annother. This is where the most legible automatism comes through. Discernible patterns include the circle in the centre, within which appears to be a mouth. Images seem to descend from here, splitting into sides, left and right, with oppossing imagery. The left side moves up and over the top through a sequence to the top right. Here things seem to terminate. Each image in the painting appears to relate with it's position on the plane. Finally, on top of the drawings, there are black splotches of oil stick with text inside from my notebooks. This creates a semantic layer above the symbolic that relates relevant insights about what is going on within this map.
