Reclaiming the Sun. 2014

This proposed sculpture for the obelisk in Piazza del Popolo in Rome makes use of the fact that obelisks were originally crowned in gold while in Egypt and were symbolic of light rays. When the obelisks were moved to Rome, they became symbols of solidity and power. The relationship with light was obscured. This sculpture proposes an intervention which would place a crystal prism at the top of the obelisk and around the base a golden dish would reflect sunlight back up enhancing the focus of the sun. Specks of rainbow would be cast throughout the piazza.
